B&O's CPL signals are probably the most obvious indication of a line's heritage that can be found today. Although the numbers are dwindling, many of these dinosaurs still soldier on.

   This treatise will introduce students to their aspects and also present a selection of photographs of the last of a vanishing species as CSX converts them to the more modern SBD style signals.

   Things you should pack before you leave for that railfan outing:

• Radio frequencies for your scanner.
• Good maps of the area, like DeLorme's Atlas & Gazetteer series.
• Emergency supplies: first aid kit, gaffer tape, a knife, mobile phone.
• Food and plenty of water!
• Working spare tire and tools to change it
• Photo supplies and scanner with fresh batteries.
• Photo ID and a home phone number people can call.
• Insect repellant
• Printouts/photocopies of railfan guides, timetables, other information

   Make sure you know where you're going, let others know what you plan to do, and if at all possible, railfan with a friend rather than alone.
